Motel in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. (photo by Shelley Robins) Opened in 1934, the motel was once the only coastal resort between New York and Miami that catered to African Americans, especially travelling musicians who were not allowed to stay at the white resorts where they were booked to perform. Musicians who played in the area and probably stayed there include Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington and Lena Horne. It closed in the 1970’s and is slated for demolition according to a demo permit posted on the property. The motel is all that is left of Magnolia Beach Club, also known as Mckenzie Beach. The motel is located on Highway 17 between Litchfield Beach and Pawleys Island. submission by naessessary.
